The story revolves around a lawyer who hires a new copyist named Bartleby to work in his office. Bartleby is initially a diligent worker, but over time he begins to refuse to do any work, stating that he would ""prefer not to."" The lawyer is initially patient with Bartleby, but as his behavior becomes more erratic and he refuses to leave the office even after being fired, the lawyer becomes increasingly frustrated and confused. The story is a commentary on the dehumanizing effects of modern society and the struggle for individuality in a world that values conformity. It also explores themes of isolation, alienation, and the nature of authority. Melville's writing style is characterized by its use of vivid imagery and complex themes, and Bartleby The Scrivener is considered one of his most significant works. The novella has been adapted into several films and has been widely studied and analyzed by literary scholars. At the period just preceding the advent of Bartleby, I had two persons as copyists in my employment, and a promising lad as an office-boy. First, Turkey; second, Nippers; third, Ginger Nut. These may seem names, the like of which are not usually found in the Directory. In truth they were nicknames, mutually conferred upon each other by my three clerks, and were deemed expressive of their respective persons or characters. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Herman Melville transforms the little world of the whale ship into a crucible where mankind's fears, faith and frailties are pitted against a relentless fate.
Author Biography

Herman Melville was born in 1819 in New York City. Both his grandfathers were Revolutionary War heroes but his father, a merchant, died bankrupt in 1833. Melville left school and worked at various jobs before shipping on the whaler Achshnet in 1841. The next year he deserted, travelled the South Seas and joined the US Navy. After three years he retired, settled in Massachusetts and started to write. His first two novels, Typee (1846) andOmoo (1847), were fictionalized accounts of his travels: they remained his most popular works during his lifetime. In 1847 Melville married and wrote a series of novels he considered potboilers for money. With Moby-Dick (1851) he changed course, partly under the influence of Nathaniel Hawthorne; but the novel's extravagant intensity lost him readers. Pierre (1852) fared no better, and after publishing one more novel Melville took a job as a customs inspector in the New York City harbour and turned to writing poetry. Only twelve when his father died bankrupt, young Herman tried work as a bank clerk, as a cabin boy on a trip to Liverpool, and as an elementary schoolteacher, before shipping in January 1841 on the whaler Acushnet, bound for the Pacific. Deserting ship the following year in the Marquesas, he made his way to Tahiti and Honolulu, returning as an ordinary seaman on the frigate United States to Boston, where he was discharged in October 1844. Books based on these adventures won him immediate success. By 1850 he was married, had acquired a farm near Pittsfield, Massachussetts (where he was the impetuous friend and neighbor of Nathaniel Hawthorne), and was hard at work on his masterpiece Moby-Dick. Literary success soon faded; his complexity increasingly alienated readers. After a visit to the Holy Land in January 1857, he turned from writing prose fiction to poetry. In 1863, during the Civil War, he moved back to New York City, where from 1866 to1885 he was a deputy inspector in the Custom House, and where, on September 28, 1891, he died. A draft of a final prose work, Billy Budd, Sailor, was left unfinished and uncollated; packed tidily away by his widow, it was not rediscovered and published until 1924.

Andrew Delbanco was born in 1952. It was first published anonymously in two parts in the November and December 1853 issues of Putnam's Magazine. This enigmatic novella is a timeless tale of isolation and defiance in the heart of New York City. Bartleby, a quiet, passive scrivener, refuses to conform to societal norms, challenging the very fabric of the rigidly structured Wall Street world. Through its profound exploration of individual agency and the complexities of human interaction, Melville's masterpiece continues to captivate readers, inviting contemplation on the nature of autonomy, compassion and the inherent contradictions of modern existence.

Number of Pages: 34

Dimensions: 0.08 x 8 x 5 IN

Publication Date: March 08, 2024

Report copyright infringement

by Herman Melville (Author)

Collector's Edition Laminated Hardback with Jacket

A restless sailor named Ishmael signs up for what he believes will be an adventurous whaling voyage, but quickly finds himself aboard the Pequod, a ship with a far darker purpose. Its captain, the grim and mysterious Ahab, is consumed by a burning desire to hunt down Moby Dick, the elusive white whale that once maimed him. Only twelve when his father died bankrupt, young Herman tried work as a bank clerk, as a cabin-boy on a trip to Liverpool, and as an elementary schoolteacher, before shipping in January 1841 on the whaler Acushnet, bound for the Pacific. Deserting ship the following year in the Marquesas, he made his way to Tahiti and Honolulu, returning as ordinary seaman on the frigate United States to Boston, where he was discharged in October 1844.

In 1863, during the Civil War, he moved back to New York City, where from 1866-1885 he was a deputy inspector in the Custom House, and where, in 1891, he died. A draft of a final prose work, Billy Budd, Sailor, was left unfinished and uncollated, packed tidily away by his widow, where it remained until its rediscovery and publication in 1924.

Number of Pages: 416

Dimensions: 0.73 x 7.72 x 5.16 IN

Publication Date: April 01, 2007

Report copyright infringement

by Herman Melville (Author)

A sailor called Ishmael narrates the obsessive quest of Ahab, captain of the whaler Pequod, for revenge on Moby Dick, a white whale which on a previous voyage destroyed Ahab's ship and severed his leg at the knee. Young sailor Ishmael is hired as a crew member of a whaler named Pequod, captained by a man named Ahab. In between lengthy chapters on whale biology and descriptions of the crew and the whaling trade, readers are slowly introduced to a captivating tale. Ahab is out for revenge on the great white whale that stole his leg, leaving him with a whale-bone prosthesis and a withering hatred for the beast. Known as Moby Dick, the whale is infamous for his encounters and escapes with whale ships, and Ahab offers a gold coin, nailed to the Pequod's mast, as a reward for whoever sights him first. Beginning on a cold Christmas morning, the crew embarks on a journey to find the whale and make their fortunes. An exciting staple of American literature, Moby-Dick is a must-read for anyone interested in the classics. Herman Melville was inspired to write Moby Dick by the 1821 biographical account Narrative of the Most Extraordinary and Distressing Shipwreck of the Whale-ship Essex (Cosimo Classics, 2015), which in turn inspired the 2000 novel and 2015 movie, In the Heart of the Sea. HERMAN MELVILLE (1819-1891) was an American novelist. Born in New York, Melville lived and worked in the city for many years before moving with his family to Massachusetts, where he enjoyed a short friendship with author Nathaniel Hawthorne. Many of Melville's books are inspired by his own experiences; he sailed on merchant and whaling ships, spent time on the Marquesas Islands with natives, and spent time in England, Egypt, and Palestine. Melville even wrote poetry reflecting on the American Civil War. He eventually retired in New York City, where he was buried in the Bronx, relatively unknown. Melville was the author of 19 books of fiction, nonfiction, and poetry, including *Typee* (1846), Moby-Dick (1851), "Bartelby the Scrivener" (1853), "Benito Cerino" (1855), Battle-Pieces and Aspects of the War (1866), and Billy Budd, Sailor (1891, unfinished).

Number of Pages: 662

Dimensions: 1.63 x 8.5 x 5.5 IN

Publication Date: January 04, 2016

Accelerated Reader:

Quiz Name: Moby-Dick, Or, the Whale (English)

Interest Level: Upper Grades, 9-12

Reading Level: 10.3

Point Value: 42

Report copyright infringement

by Herman Melville (Author), D. At the heart of this masterful work of American literature lies the enigmatic Captain Ahab, a man consumed by his monomaniacal quest to slay the great white whale that took his leg-a quest that leads him and his crew aboard the Pequod on a perilous journey into the deepest, darkest reaches of the human soul. Melville's expansive narrative takes readers on an unforgettable voyage that transcends the boundaries of a mere whaling expedition, delving into the depths of human ambition, fear, and obsession. As the Pequod and its crew traverse the vast expanse of the ocean, Moby-Dick emerges as a profound meditation on the nature of existence, the duality of man, and the eternal struggle between humanity and the unfathomable forces of the universe. Rich in symbolism, vivid detail, and unparalleled storytelling, Moby-Dick is an enduring testament to Melville's literary genius, offering readers a timeless exploration of the human condition and a haunting portrayal of the fine line between obsession and madness. The novel is concerned with its titular character, Billy Budd, a navy sailor accused of mutiny by a fellow officer, who immediately strikes his accuser dead, followed quickly by a trial, conviction and execution. Narrating the story of a slave revolt using materials drawn from Amasa Delano's non-fictional account of the Tryal Rebellion from earlier in the nineteenth-century, Melville's story probes the moral complexities of the antebellum United States and its position within the Americas. Melville explores the psychology of slavery and racism and role of violence in both resistance to slavery and the perpetuation of slavery in the Americas.

The appendices to this volume illustrate how Melville's satirical treatment of racism and his ambivalent response to violent resistance to slavery connect with antislavery literature (poetry, fiction, and non-fiction alike) in the middle of the nineteenth century, and they also consider how "Benito Cereno" functions as a central piece in Melville's contribution to the literature of the Americas.

Ishmael finds himself on a sprawling, epic hunt for the great white whale in one of the most singular and celebrated novels in American literature.

First published in 1851, Moby Dick is narrated by the young seaman Ishmael who takes ship on the whaler Pequod, under the command of Captain Ahab. Once at sea Ahab reveals that their voyage is not aimed at profitable whaling so much as pure vengeance as they are to hunt the white whale that maimed him, leaving him with a single leg. A rich array of memorable characters are introduced as the Pequod sails the sea, encountering other whalers, hunting whales and seeking Moby Dick. Sprawling and discursive, luxuriant and richly textured, Melville's novel is almost a world unto itself. Life aboard ship, friendships between the diverse collection of sailors and the hazardous adventure of confronting whales on the open sea are captured unforgettably, but all of this is under the shadow of Ahab's all-consuming hatred of the white whale. As the ship draws nearer to confrontation with her captain's nemesis, the novel moves toward a devastating climax. Initially greeted with little enthusiasm by American critics, a notable exception being Nathaniel Hawthorne, Moby Dick has since come to be seen as one of the greatest achievements of American fiction and a classic for the ages.

Since our inception in 2020, Mint Editions has kept sustainability and innovation at the forefront of our mission.
