Today, the group provides crucial evidence for international courts and works with a wide range of activist groups, NGOs, Amnesty International, and the UN.

Beyond shedding new light on human rights violations and state crimes across the globe, Forensic Architecture has also created a new form of investigative practice that bears its name. The group uses architecture as an optical device to investigate armed conflicts and environmental destruction, as well as to cross-reference a variety of evidence sources, such as new media, remote sensing, material analysis, witness testimony, and crowd-sourcing.

In Forensic Architecture, Eyal Weizman, the group's founder, provides, for the first time, an in-depth introduction to the history, practice, assumptions, potentials, and double binds of this practice. The book includes an extensive array of images, maps, and detailed documentation that records the intricate work the group has performed.

Included in this volume are case studies that traverse multiple scales and durations, ranging from the analysis of the shrapnel fragments in a room struck by drones in Pakistan, the reconstruction of a contested shooting in the West Bank, the architectural recreation of a secret Syrian detention center from the memory of its survivors, a blow-by-blow account of a day-long battle in Gaza, and an investigation of environmental violence and climate change in the Guatemalan highlands and elsewhere.

Weizman's Forensic Architecture, stunning and shocking in its critical narrative, powerful images, and daring investigations, presents a new form of public truth, technologically, architecturally, and aesthetically produced. This is the fascinating, littleknown history of the railroad company that owned Grand Central, the architects and engineers who built it, the city that supported it, and the lawsuit that saved it. The cast of characters is immense: some familiar, like Mayor Robert Wagner and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, and some now obscure, like Albert Bard, father of the New York Landmarks Law. Railroad moguls, real estate barons, politicians, arts experts, and above all lawyers and judges all played vital roles. It is a story of landmark law at a critical moment in its existence and what property owners ultimately do with their assets. Finally, this is the story of one of the greatest cities in the world, in microcosm.

Opened in 1913, Grand Central Terminal (GCT) became a costly luxury for the New York Central Railroad in the postwar years, as the rise of automobile culture and interstate highway systems led to a precipitous decline in railroad use. In the 1950s, proposals were put forward to replace GCT with more lucrative buildings, including the massive Pei Tower. This led Bard in 1954 to draft an act for New York State to recognize landmarks, the Historic Preservation Enabling Act. It was passed by the legislature and signed into law in 1956, though it was not used to create the New York City Landmarks Law until 1965--by which time Pennsylvania Station had been demolished to make way for the fourth, and current, iteration of Madison Square Garden. Immediately after the landmark designation for GCT became official in 1967, New York Central Railroad merged with Pennsylvania Railroad to form Penn Central, and the new company proposed to demolish GCT the way it had Pennsylvania Station. When New York refused to consider the plans, Penn Central sued the city, thus paving way for the legal battle that the Supreme Court finally decided in 1978.

Louis Hull Hoffer sheds new light on the suit between the Pennsylvania Railroad and the City of New York, showing how this iconic legal battle pit two core values of American jurisprudence against one another: the absolute right of property owners over their property and the public's interest in shared urban spaces. While the tension between these values persists today, Penn Central v. Art historians, artists, and anyone who wants to use the images of others will find themselves awash in byzantine legal terms, constantly evolving copyright law, varying interpretations by museums and estates, and despair over the complexity of the whole situation. Here, on a white--not a high--horse, Susan Bielstein offers her decades of experience as an editor working with illustrated books. In doing so, she unsnarls the threads of permissions that have ensnared scholars, critics, and artists for years.

Organized as a series of "takes" that range from short sidebars to extended discussions, Permissions, A Survival Guide explores intellectual property law as it pertains to visual imagery. How can you determine whether an artwork is copyrighted? How do you procure a high-quality reproduction of an image? What does "fair use" really mean? Is it ever legitimate to use the work of an artist without permission? Bielstein discusses the many uncertainties that plague writers who work with images in this highly visual age, and she does so based on her years navigating precisely these issues. As an editor who has hired a photographer to shoot an incredibly obscure work in the Italian mountains (a plan that backfired hilariously), who has tried to reason with artists' estates in languages she doesn't speak, and who has spent her time in the archival trenches, she offers a snappy and humane guide to this difficult terrain.

Filled with anecdotes, asides, and real courage, Permissions, A Survival Guide is a unique handbook that anyone working in the visual arts will find invaluable, if not indispensable.
Author Biography

Susan M. The book explores the relationship between nature, harmony, and proportional form. Colman argues that nature is inherently harmonious and that this harmony can be expressed through proportional form. He examines various examples from nature, such as the growth patterns of plants and the proportions of the human body, to illustrate his point. Colman also discusses the history of proportional form in art and architecture, including the use of the golden ratio.

Wells and modern-day digital activists--Mchangama reveals how the free exchange of ideas underlies all intellectual achievement and has enabled the advancement of both freedom and equality worldwide. Yet the desire to restrict speech, too, is a constant, and he explores how even its champions can be led down this path when the rise of new and contrarian voices challenge power and privilege of all stripes.

Updated with a new epilogue addressing topics ranging from AI to campus protests, Free Speech demonstrates how much we have gained from this principle--and how much we stand to lose without it.

From the man who coined the term "net neutrality," comes a warning about the dangers of excessive corporate and industrial concentration for our economic and political future.

We live in an age of extreme corporate concentration, in which global industries are controlled by just a few giant firms--big banks, big pharma, and big tech, just to name a few. Neal, who writes as a Platonist, concentrates on the ancient world, and shows that the ancients knew most if not all that Thompson and Colman present, and more, for Neal brings it all into the spiritual realm and makes it obvious that the principals of science and math are nothing but the hand of god made manifest."-Todd Pratum. Samuel Colman was born in Portland, Maine in 1832. His father was a fine-arts bookseller and publisher who moved to New York City while Samuel, Jr. was a boy. His store on Broadway became a center for artists and literary types. In New York, Colman studied painting under Hudson River artist Asher B. Durand. At age 18 he showed his first painting, "Morning", at the National Academy of Design; in 1860 he was already an associate, and by 1862 he had become a full academician. He exhibited at the Boston Athenaeum, the Maryland Historical Society, and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. From 1860 to 1862 and from 1871 to 1875, Colman traveled to France, Italy, Spain and Morocco, studying and painting. His oils before 1870 are characterized by a lucid style indicative of an affinity for watercolor, which he also used. His later work shows the influence of the barbizon painters in bucolic, unpopulated scenes, broadly executed. Colman was a many faceted man: etcher, collector and authority on oriental art and porcelains. He did some interior design and worked for Louis Comfort Tiffany and John Lafarge in the 1880's. He wrote two books on art, Nature's Harmonic Unity, and Proportional Form. Remarkably, the legal scholar Thomas Lund, has, in real life, done just that. Here, after hundreds of years, is a readable, brilliant, and deep study of the sources of the basic principles of the Anglo-American Legal System still in use today-the medieval Year Books-until now utterly inaccessible except to a few specialists in the most arcane legal history. This amazing and delightful book will be of profound interest to anyone who has ever believed that the rule of law is about more than the arbitrary machinations of politicians. Simply stated, Thomas Lund has given us one of the most important works on law in this generation."--STEPHEN B. PRESSER, Raoul Berger Professor of Legal History, Northwestern University School of Law

"The goal of Thomas Lund's Creation of the Common Law is to render a selection of material from the Year Books accessible to an educated lay audience, which wants to understand how medieval English law actually worked. He has performed his task with a clarity and economy that are admirable-and with a certain beguiling whimsy. The book is altogether a stunning achievement and will be especially valuable for the light it throws on subjects dear to the hearts of medievalists who are not in themselves legal specialists, indeed, who have tended to avoid the linguistically forbidding Year Books."--WILLIAM CHESTER JORDAN, Princeton University

"An innovative invitation to the fascinating world of the medieval English Yearbooks. Professor Lund opens this vast range of law reports to the scrutiny of students of modern as well as medieval law. Within his book, Chief Justice Bereford and Christopher Columbus Langdell meet to provide a highly original schooling in the early Common Law."-- JOHN HUDSON, University of St Andrews

"Modern lawyers and laypeople are often daunted by the inaccessibility of the early sources... It is for just this reason that this masterful compilation and commentary by Professor Thomas Lund offers such a great contribution to the study of the history and evolution of our legal culture. On topic after topic, reading the colloquies at the bench, we can see all the players jockeying for rhetorical advantage. One of the great joys of Lund's writing is that he casts these materials as part of a complex narrative, organized by topic. Beautifully encapsulated in paraphrase, the cases preserve the urgency and spontaneity of the arguments.... Treat the book as a series of connected episodes that can be read in large or small chunks. Open up to any page or section, read for amusement and enlightenment, and then return to the larger text on some future day. These materials are rich, and they will richly reward those who are willing to work their way through them."--Foreword, RICHARD EPSTEIN, New York University School of Law

Thomas Lund, a Professor at the S. Art historical understandings of law can be found sitting next to doctrinal depictions of street art and graffiti, philosophical questions of space, community, and autonomy next to cultural and legal ethnographies of control and incarceration. Scholars of human rights and of commemorative arts discuss the aesthetics and politics not only of sites of commemoration, but of literature, poetry, visual arts and increasingly, film and comics. Art, memory and activism are also increasingly intertwined. But within the literature around post-conflict transitional justice and critical human rights studies, there is little questioning about what memorial arts do for gender justice, how women and men are included and represented, and how this intertwines with other questions of identity and representation, such as race and ethnicity. The book brings together research from scholars around the world who are interested in the gendered dimensions of memory-making in transitional societies. Addressing a global range of cases, including genocide, authoritarianism, civil war, electoral violence and apartheid, they consider not only the gendered commemoration of past violence, but also the possibility of producing counter-narratives that unsettle and challenge established stereotypes.

Aimed at those interested in the fields of transitional justice, memory studies, post-conflict peacebuilding, human rights and gender studies, this book will appeal to academics, researchers and practitioners.

Real trials and courtroom movies are made for each other. All too often, achieving block buster status for a patent protected medication becomes an end in itself, as Big Pharma companies manipulate clinical trial data, draft scholarly articles for friendly physicians often in their pay, and market their drugs for uses that never had been approved by the federal Food and Drug Administration.

This last practice proved to be something of an Achilles Heel for the industry. In litigation that resulted in settlement and fines in the billions, companies such as Eli Lilly acknowledged marketing drugs off label to a broad range of patients for whom the medications had never been approved. Sheller's litigation formed the basis for these settlements and the effort is ongoing. He and other plaintiffs' lawyers now are suing Janssen Pharmaceuticals for the adverse impacts of its drug, Risperdal, a second generation anti-psychotic that Sheller and others allege is linked to the growth of female breast tissue in young boys and men. Already there have been several big jury verdicts against Janssen with hundreds of more cases yet to be tried.

In the book, Sheller not only recounts his major litigation battles but also makes sweeping proposals for industry reform. Compared to European cities, those in the United States are characterized by lower densities and greater distances; neat, geometric layouts; an abundance of green space; a greater level of social segregation reflected in space; and--perhaps most noticeably--a greater share of individual, single-family detached housing. In Zoned in the USA, Sonia A. Hirt argues that zoning laws are among the important but understudied reasons for the cross-continental differences.Hirt shows that rather than being imported from Europe, U.S. municipal zoning law was in fact an institution that quickly developed its own, distinctly American profile. A distinct spatial culture of individualism--founded on an ideal of separate, single-family residences apart from the dirt and turmoil of industrial and agricultural production--has driven much of municipal regulation, defined land-use, and, ultimately, shaped American life. Hirt explores municipal zoning from a comparative and international perspective, drawing on archival resources and contemporary land-use laws from England, Germany, France, Australia, Russia, Canada, and Japan to challenge assumptions about American cities and the laws that guide them.

This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.

This work is in the public domain in the United States of America, and possibly other nations.
