Thomas More
THOMAS MORE (1478-1535) rose from humble origins to achieve the highest political and judicial office of England, second only to the king. He was recognized throughout Europe as one of the great lawyers, Christian humanists, and classical scholars of his day. Despite refusing to endorse Henry VIII's plan to divorce Katherine, More became Lord Chancellor in 1529. He resigned in 1532 in disapproval of Henry's stance toward the church. He refused to attend the coronation of Anne Boleyn in June 1533, a matter which did not escape the King's notice. In April, 1534, More refused to swear to the Act of Succession, and the Oath of Supremacy, and was committed to the Tower of London on April 17. He was found guilty of treason and was beheaded on July 6, 1535. His final words on the scaffold were: "The King's good servant, but God's first." In 1935 Thomas More was canonized by the Roman Catholic Church. In 2000 Pope John Paul II declared him the patron saint of politicians.

Report copyright infringement

by Thomas More (Author), Gilbert Burnet (Translator)

Unabridged English value reproduction of Utopia by Thomas More and translated by Gilbert Burnet, in this affordably printed volume, is a book that belongs on everyone's shelf.

Published originally in 1516, More made popular the common usage of the term Utopia, "as a communal place where everything is perfect." A lawyer himself, Utopia includes no lawyers due to the law's simplicity. More opposed the Protestant reformation and denied the King's position as head of the Church of England. This act would ultimately lead to his trial for treason and execution. Despite his tragic downfall, he will forever be remembered for his pioneering work "Utopia." Thomas More first coined the word utopia in his 1516 book of the same name. Although the concept of a near perfect society dates back at least to the period of classical antiquity, it is Thomas More's work that would establish itself as the most famous example of this genre of literature. More's "Utopia" is described as an idealized island community upon which perfect social harmony has been achieved, all property is community owned, violence is nonexistent and everyone has the opportunity to work and live in an environment of religious tolerance. An inspiration for many social movements throughout history "Utopia," will forever be regarded as a groundbreaking work of social philosophy.
