After leaving the army, he worked as a GP. He was extensively involved in medical politics, both at local and national level. An established expert on the Eastern Front in 20th-century military history, his previous books include a critically acclaimed two-volume history of the siege of Leningrad. His most recent books are \u003ci\u003eInto the Reich\u003c\/i\u003e (2025) and \u003ci\u003eBerlin: Endgame 1945\u003c\/i\u003e (2026).
