About John H. McManus Ph. D. Books
John H. McManus is a former journalist, journalism professor and news critic. He researches, writes and speaks about the intersection of journalism, technology and democracy. His work has been published in many academic and trade journals and his books have twice won the annual research award from the Society of Professional Journalists. In 2000, he created GradetheNews.org, a website that did for news in the San Francisco Bay Area what Consumer Reports Magazine does for cars and computers. Grade the News randomly sampled the most popular Bay Area newspapers and local newscasts and rated them on seven yardsticks of journalism quality. The project was funded by the Gerbode, Ford and Knight foundations and won both regional and national awards. He earned his B.A. at Holy Cross, his M.A. in journalism at the University of Michigan, and his Ph.D. at Stanford.
