Maurine Bergerie, a native Iberian, received her BA from the University of Southwestern Louisiana and taught for several years in South Louisiana and Iberia Parish schools before earning her MA at Louisiana State University in 1956. Mrs. Bergerie majored in American history and minored in French. Iberia Parish is one of the oldest settlements in the state of Louisiana, with a long and important past. Mrs. Bergerie has condensed this history into a readable and informative book. They Tasted Bayou Water is a result of the writer's interest in the early years of her home parish, an interest that was stirred by tales of family and local legends.
