In a hidden alcove, they happened on a small apple tree. Tempted, Emma took a bite, then offered the apple to her husband. He, too, took a bite. At that moment, eternity yawned open, plunging them headlong into a metaphysical reckoning that would shatter the core of what they believed and expose what their hearts had denied.
