Book Overview

by Noel Jones (Author)

See LOOK INSIDE for the list of pieces and composers, including Titelouze, Malingreau, Collin, Buxtehude and Lefébure-Wely.

Wonderful pieces reflecting the Contemplation of Advent and the Glory of Christmas.

Almost all may be used throughout the year, only a few will be recognized as being "Christmas" music.

Typically we include a list of suggested registrations.

Many of these pieces being from early times, the composer played them on whatever stops they had on their organ quite possibly the size of the one you are playing and we suggest the same to you. You will find that certain stops on your organ have a certain sound that matches them to these pieces

Pieces up to the time of Bach and earlier were played on organs without an expression pedal. So moving from manual to manual was done to give variety to the sounds of the organ.

Early pieces have simple suggested registrations that we suggest. Later pieces in this collection have the original stop registrations suggested by the composer and expres- sion markings as well.

To match organ stops you have with these suggested on the music that you may be unfamiliar with, visit www.organstops.org

All the music is arranged by season and is alphabetical within the season.

There is a good mix of music for Manuals Only and Manuals with Pedals in this book.

It contains many short pieces and pieces made up of short sections, making it especially useful when playing at Mass.

About Noel Jones

Noel Jones first sang chant in a choir of men and boys and followed that up by chanting daily masses as a teenager in a small town in Ohio. Summer studies with Benedictine monks took him further along the chant path prior to his leaving for New York City where he directed Catholic choirs and was organist at the Church Center for the United Nations as well as accompanist for the United Nations Singers. Later in Germany he was organist for the English masses at the DOM Cathedral in Frankfurt. In Italy, he played for masses at Il Duomo in Barga, Italy and produced and conducted the town's annual San Cristoforo Day celebration concert in the 11th century church. Working as an opera coach, he has worked with singers in Germany, Italy and the United States As a church organ designer, he eventually located in Tennessee, where he joined the staff of a Catholic church as director of music, involved in returning church music to chant and polyphony. The choir grew from 16 to 46 under his leadership. He is an Associate of the American Guild of Organists and is a member of the Church Music Association of America. He serves as Creative Director at www.frogmusic.com. Most recently, he taught Liturgical Music at a Catholic High School. He is a popular clinician for workshops on chant, choral conducting, organ registration and hymn playing.
