Book Overview

by Sean Freeman (Author)

In 1972, Inspector Per Stendal is thrust into an international mystery when the disfigured body of a young actress is discovered aboard Roald Amundsen's historic ship, Gj a, recently repatriated from San Francisco. A roguish former national ski racer, Steindal is tasked with escorting the body back to the hip and happening City by the Bay. There he is paired with the formidable veteran inspector Lucy Chan, a single mom grappling with her place in a male-dominated police department and her fiancé's imprisonment at the Hanoi Hilton.

Despite their different styles and priorities, the two inspectors gradually warm to each other as they battle to overcome the avalanche of obstacles thrown in their path by the lead inspector on the Zodiac serial-killer case, a biker gang of Vietnam vets, San Francisco's most infamous pornographer, and Clint Eastwood - or is it his doppelgänger?

When one murder turns to three, threatening to overwhelm their entire investigation, Steindal and Chan concoct an elaborate ruse to draw out the killer, turning a Tenderloin underground club into a stage set, replete with jazz band, professional sound, lighting, and special effects, and a full cast of characters - cops, robbers, art forgers, smut peddlers, and a famous movie star.
