Book Overview

by William Caxton (Author), Thomas Malory (Author)

"Book of Sir Balin" recounts the tragic tale of Sir Balin, a knight of King Arthur's court. Known as the Knight with the Two Swords, Balin is a figure of immense strength and prowess, but also one plagued by misfortune. His story is interwoven with themes of fate, honor, and the complexities of chivalry in the medieval world.

Adapted and printed by William Caxton from Sir Thomas Malory's "Le Morte d'Arthur", this edition presents Balin's adventures, his noble deeds, and the prophecies that foretell his doom. Balin's impulsive nature and the enchantments that surround him lead to a series of unfortunate events, culminating in a fateful encounter with his own brother, unaware of their kinship, resulting in mutual destruction. "Book of Sir Balin" explores the darker aspects of Arthurian legend, illustrating the precarious nature of heroism and the devastating consequences of misunderstanding and fate.

About Thomas Malory

No one knows for sure who the author of Le Morte D'Arthur was, but the generally accepted theory is that of American scholar G.L. Kitteredge, who argued it was Sir Thomas Malory, born in the first quarter of the fifteenth century, and who spent the greatest part of his last twenty years in prison. Another possibility is a Thomas Malory of Studley and Hutton in Yorkshire, or an author living north of Warwickshire. It is generally accepted that the author was a member of the gentry and a Lancastrain.
