Book Overview

Heartbroken and betrayed, college senior Jenny Cates returns home for spring break, seeking solace in her family. Instead, she stumbles upon her mother, a prominent lawyer, brutally attacked in her office. With her last breath before slipping into a coma, her mother utters a desperate plea: Run, Jen. Burn the diaries and run.

As Jenny grapples with the cryptic message, she receives a mysterious package from her mother's best friend, which she believes contains the diaries. But before she can delve into their secrets, Jenny's world is upended by a shocking revelation: the man she's always known as her father isn't. Her real father is a powerful politician, now running for president, who will stop at nothing to keep his past buried-including silencing Jenny. With one man determined to destroy her and another eager to exploit her for political gain, Jenny is thrust into a high-stakes game of cat and mouse. Armed with only her wits and the resilience honed by years of playing college soccer, Jenny goes on the run, pursued by two powerful forces with everything to lose.As she evades capture, Jenny begins reading her mother's diaries, uncovering the truth about her mother's past, her first law job, and a passionate affair with the attorney general-her real father. But as she forms a deep connection with the mother who may never wake up, Jenny realizes that to survive, she must destroy the diaries before they fall into the wrong hands.

In a final desperate move, Jenny escapes back to Maine to confront the man who fathered her, expose the truth, and unravel the campaigns of two ruthless men.

About Kate Flora

Kate Flora's fascination with people's criminal tendencies began in the Maine attorney general's office. Deadbeat dads, people who hurt their kids, and employers' discrimination aroused her curiosity about human behavior. The author of nineteen books and more than twenty short stories, Flora's been a finalist for the Edgar, Agatha, Anthony, and Derringer awards. She won the Public Safety Writers Association award for nonfiction and twice won the Maine Literary Award for crime fiction. Her latest fiction is Schooled in Death, her 9th Thea Kozak mystery. Her latest nonfiction is Shots Fired: The misconceptions, misunderstandings, and myths about police shootings with retired Portland Assistant Chief Joseph K. Loughlin. Flora divides her time between Massachusetts and Maine, and between cooking and gardening and obsessive writing.
