Book Overview

by Selma Lagerlöf (Author)

"Christmas Roses: Legends for Advent" is a captivating collection of stories by Nobel Prize-winning author Selma Lagerlöf, renowned for her ability to weave folklore and spirituality into timeless narratives. The title story, "The Legend of the Christmas Rose," tells the evocative tale of the Goinge Forest, which transforms into a miraculous garden every Christmas Eve in honor of the Nativity. Through themes of faith, redemption, and the wonders of the natural world, Lagerlöf explores the intersection of the divine and the mundane.

These legends capture the solemnity and joy of the Advent season, offering readers a series of profound reflections on the holiday's deeper meanings. Lagerlöf's lyrical prose and mastery of the short story form make this work a staple of holiday literature, appealing to those who cherish traditional storytelling and the rich heritage of Scandinavian folklore. This collection serves as a beautiful companion for the winter months, inviting readers into a world where miracles are possible and the spirit of Christmas blossoms in the most unexpected places.

About Selma Lagerlöf

Selma Lagerlöf was born on Nov. 20, 1858, in the province of Varmland, Sweden. She was born at home on the family estate called, Mårbacka. As a child, Selma spent countless hours writing poetry. A childhood illness left her unable to walk for a period of about two years so she spent hours reading books and being educated by governesses. At the age of twenty-two, she took college preparatory classes. She stayed on the family estate until she was twenty-three years old, at which time she enrolled in a teachers' college located at Stockholm. Four years later, she became a teacher for an all-girls secondary school based in Landskrona. After five years of teaching, she had finally finished her first novel and had submitted part of it to a literary contest posted in a Swedish publication. They awarded her first place. The following year in 1891, "Gösta Berling's Saga" was published. Once the book was translated into Danish, it received notoriety that propelled her success in her home country and abroad.
