Jamie Ptak is a man used to taking the paths others have laid for him. What other choice does he have under the command of thieves who have robbed him of his autonomy? He dreams of freedom but has not the courage to take it. The ruins beyond Crawford's walls- the alloy zones- are filled with all sorts of monsters and enigmas who seek to make a profit in the lawless lands beyond a reborn society.

But the dangers outside of the walls aren't the only things Jamie has to worry about: he isn't the only one fleeing from his past. He must make choices which can never be undone and take destiny into his own hands. The only question is, will he find the nerve to triumph over a world which seeks to make him its puppet?
