Aurelia MacLiath is a small town girl who busses tables at a local restaurant. She visited her grandparents to celebrate her birthday, only to be accosted by her absentee mother. When she steps outside, a wild fox approaches her and begins speaking to her, causing Aura to question her sanity until her family sees the beast and have the most bizarre reaction.

Overwhelmed, she storms off into the nearby forest to mentally reconcile the lies she's been raised under, but trips in her haste, falling into another realm entirely. Now she must find a way to stay alive in the Faewilds, where everyone and everything (even the damned plants) are trying to kill her. A land where long lost legends are real, locked away from her world for over a millennium. She stumbles upon a Sidhe male who is annoyingly determined to help her, though she can't decide if it's through pity or because he is amused by her astounding skill at ending up in troublesome circumstances.
