Book Overview

by Honore De Balzac (Author)

Father Goriot is a novel by French author Honore De Balzac, first published in 1835. It tells the story of a retired vermicelli maker named Jean-Joachim Goriot, who lives in a boarding house in Paris, where he is surrounded by a group of ambitious and ruthless characters. The novel explores themes of love, money, power, and social status, as the characters navigate their way through the complex social hierarchy of Parisian society. The central character, Father Goriot, is a self-made man who has sacrificed everything for his two daughters, who are married to wealthy men. Despite his wealth, he is treated with contempt by his daughters and their husbands, who see him as a burden. The other characters in the novel include a young law student named Eugene de Rastignac, who is trying to climb the social ladder, and a mysterious criminal named Vautrin, who is plotting to overthrow the established order.Throughout the novel, Balzac paints a vivid picture of Parisian society, with its glittering balls, fashionable salons, and corrupt political system. He also explores the darker side of human nature, as characters betray each other for personal gain, and Father Goriot's tragic fate serves as a warning about the dangers of greed and ambition.Father Goriot is widely regarded as one of Balzac's masterpieces, and is considered a key work of French literature. It has been translated into numerous languages, and has been adapted for stage, film, and television.Eugene stared at his neighbor in dumb and dazed bewilderment. He thought of Vautrin, of that duel to be fought to-morrow morning, and of this realization of his dearest hopes, and the violent contrast between the two sets of ideas gave him all the sensations of nightmare. He went to the chimney-piece, saw the little square case, opened it, and found a watch of Breguet's make wrapped in paper, on which these words were written. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. About Honore De Balzac

Honoré de Balzac (1799-1850), one of the greatest and most influential of novelists, was born in Tours and educated at the Collège Vendôme and the Sorbonne. He began his career as a pseudonymous writer of sensational potboilers before achieving success with a historical novel, The Chouans. Balzac then conceived his great work, The Human Comedy, an ongoing series of novels in which he set out to offer a complete picture of contemporary society and manners. Always working under an extraordinary burden of debt, Balzac wrote some eighty-five novels in the course of his last twenty years, including such masterpieces as Père Goriot, Eugénie Grandet, Lost Illusions, and Cousin Bette. In 1850, he married Eveline Hańska, a rich Polish woman with whom he had long conducted an intimate correspondence. Three months later he died. In addition to The Girl with the Golden Eyes, NYRB Classics publishes The Human Comedy: Selected Stories, The Lily in the Valley, The Memoirs of Two Young Wives, and The Unknown Masterpiece.
