Book Overview

by J. L. Thaxton (Author)

Ready for a game? It's called two truths and a lie. You guess the lie:

  1. I am a skilled violinist and have taken lessons since I was four years old
  2. I was found abandoned in the woods as a baby
  3. I can't always control my temper, and sometimes people get hurt

Think you've got it? Here's a hint . . . I'm terrible at violin.

No one knows where Fern Masden came from, and no one knows who-or what-she's becoming. Abandoned in the woods as a baby, Fern is discovered by a hiker and later adopted by the doctor who cared for her.

Flash forward thirteen years and she's living in NYC, her mother the top pediatrician at Children's Hospital. Only, Fern is sick; she can't keep down any food, can't sleep, and has terrible headaches and coughing fits. After months of inconclusive tests, her mother wakes her in the dead of the night and moves them to a cabin in a mysterious town in the middle of nowhere. Within a few days of living at the cabin, Fern feels extraordinarily better, but she soon discovers that her new home is in the wilderness for a reason.

It turns out that Fern has emerging powers, and now she has another battle to fight. She has to figure out what's going on inside her before the creature within takes over the human girl she longs to be.
