Weaving through the narrative is a thread of realistic fantasy, the myths of selkies and mermaids hinted at the edges of the story and reflecting the themes of loss and love. In the end, Serena must face her nightmares on a return trip to the ocean she once loved. Only then is she able to fight her way through and make her ultimate decision - to stay, live, love - or leave.

Author Biography

H. L. Blake has been a poet and writer from her first haiku at the age of 8: "In the dusk of time/When the sun bows its head low/I go to dreamland." She has written a plethora of poems as well as two young adult novels and has plans for more. Her day job is a librarian, where she spends most of her time trying to catch up with what the kids are reading. Her dearest obsessions include sci-fi/fantasy, the ocean, newborn kittens, adventure games, frappuccinos, and of course libraries of all shapes and sizes.
