Book Overview

by Sondra J. Hardy (Author)

Sistahs of the Tarot, Readers of the Truth is a collection of stories that are short, tall, long, dark, yet humorous, and ultimately provide lessons learned. They share my stories, which may help complete some missing pieces of certain puzzles.

The stories set in New Orleans and Harlem are from 1956, a time when change was slowly emerging within Black and Latino communities. The readers, including Ambroisine Honoré, keep up her tradition of reading cards or tea leaves. She also has a large table filled with various items, from chocolates to bath salts. However, don't be deceived-these items on her table should not be touched unless she specifically "prescribes" them.

Whelp, one of her clients did, and paid dearly for the consequences.

In Harlem, Ian Seesall, known as "Mr. Sees-All," is a gay Dominican man with an extraordinary talent for what are now called "out of body" experiences. During his readings, he is physically present but can, at critical moments, "remove" himself to observe what is happening. This ability helps him protect his clients from misfortune and allows him to see extraordinary events, which he finds particularly fascinating.

He's known for serving tea and his favorite treats, Mantecaditos (butter cookies), which he believes are perfect to enjoy with hot tea during his readings.

He makes a batch every other day; they're so delicious!

Betty Coins from Chicago, a tarot card reader in 1934, is the final character. Her story centers on a client who struggled to accept being unwanted by a Pullman Porter she loved deeply. Despite several card readings, Coins consistently received the same message.

Sadly, Coins met an untimely end during her last reading.
