His resulting debilitating physical existence also causes a breakdown in his social life, especially with his first love, Susie Polanski, or at least as it appears from his perspective. This confluence of eroding threads in Jacob's life creates the battlefield for Evil's attack and for Goodness' protection, the result of which casts all parties down an unexpected road.
