The Last King of Äncale - Hardcover

by Scott Hertzog (Author)

The Last King of Äncale is an adult epic fantasy about plague, sacrifice, and the dangerous hope that even the condemned might still be saved.

For five years, the Scourge has devoured the elven homeland of Kalébar. Its victims do not simply die. They remain trapped within their own bodies while something else takes hold-violent, relentless, and hungry to spread. Entire villages have been burned to contain it. Along the borders between elves and men, soldiers hold a fragile defensive line while fear and desperation slowly poison the alliance meant to preserve what remains of the world.

Wurty Longfallow is not a warrior. He is a plantsman raised among flowers, healing herbs, and quiet fields far from the centers of power. After losing his parents to the first wave of the Scourge, he lives with his aging uncles near the frontier, trying to preserve life in a world increasingly governed by fire.

But when the Scourge breaches the line and his home is destroyed in a containment burning, Wurty is forced onto a path far larger than grief.

Drawn into the service of kings, healers, hunters, and exiles, he joins an unlikely company searching for a cure whispered of only in myth: the Winter Rose, a flower said to sever the corruption without killing the host. Their journey will carry them through frozen wilderness, ancient ruins, hostile lands, and the haunted remnants of civilizations swallowed by the Scourge centuries earlier.

Yet time is running out.

King Thagnor of men has already made his decision. If no cure is found before winter fully descends, he will unleash fire upon the infected elven homeland itself-destroying Kalébar in order to save the kingdoms beyond it.

As war closes in and old truths emerge from forgotten archives, the company begins to uncover the terrifying origins of the Scourge: a corruption rooted not merely in disease, but in forbidden sorcery, wandering souls, and powers long buried beneath history.

At the heart of it all stands Wurty-a man armed not with magic or conquest, but with compassion, endurance, and the belief that mercy may still matter in a world preparing to burn.

Perfect for readers of sweeping character-driven fantasy, The Last King of Äncale blends mythic atmosphere, moral complexity, and slow-burning emotional stakes into a haunting tale of survival and redemption.
