WW II caused massive destruction across Europe, Asia, and Africa. It also caused suffering in the homeland of the United States. This novel reveals the trauma of the soldiers in the war and the suffering of many in the American homeland. How did the war affect the Americans of German descent?

We follow the journey of Michael, an only child in Indianapolis. At the time of the war, Michael discovers that he has a twin brother in Germany. Michael is commissioned a Lieutenant in the 3d Infantry Division and begins his incredible journey through the war in Europe to try to find his twin brother. Michael experiences combat in Africa, France, and Germany. He witnesses the destruction of the German cities and after the war serves in Germany as part of the occupation military.

Michael's is an odyssey hoping to find the brother he had believed he never had. He wants to finally have a brother. How does his searching end? What effect does Michael's experiences in the war shape his thinking about combat and war?
