Derby McLane grew up in the small town of Gatlinburg, Tennessee. He was raised by his estranged, veteran father after his mother died in childbirth. Derby didn't have much growing up and spent most of his time alone until he met the beautiful, Lynn Walker. Derby and Lynn bonded on the fact that both of them are the only children in their families and decided to be each other's lock and key.

When Derby applies for an internship in Japan, his relationship with Lynn turns to rocky grounds. While waiting to hear back from the offer, he decides to spend the rest of his summer with Lynn avoiding the topic.
