United States of Amnesia: The Stories America Wants To Forget - Hardcover

by Jonas McCord (Author), Rita Lewis (Editorial Coordination by)

This book is not history the way they teach it in school. It's not about dates and treaties and names carved into marble. It's about what was felt. What was lost. What was carried. It's about the people who were broken and the ones who broke-and the few who stood in between and said, not this time.

I started gathering these stories because I needed to know if the country I grew up believing in ever existed. Not the flag-waving version. The real one. The one that sings in pain and hope at the same time. The one that limps. The one that remembers.

You won't find a table of contents here. No straight line to walk from beginning to end. That's not how memory works. These are sketches, testimonies, fragments of lives that refuse to be forgotten. Some begin with portraits. Some with wounds. You can start anywhere. Open the book like you would a door. Step inside. Listen.

I didn't invent these people. I remembered them. Or if I didn't remember them, I listened until I could. Some are composites-because history doesn't always come in single voices. Sometimes it arrives like a storm, with too many names to hold. But every voice here is drawn from truth-felt truth, lived truth, the kind you don't need footnotes for because it still hurts in the bones.
