When she hatches a plan to ditch her little brother and sister so she can study her flock in peace, Chickie gets locked in the barn with a rattlesnake.

After Chickie helps transport her pregnant mother to meet an ambulance, she is forced to spend the afternoon with the teacher at the country school, who shows her how to make a thief-catcher. Will the strange device help Chickie identify the egg thief? Will she crack the chicken clucking code? Will everyone survive the day?
