Book Overview

by Algernon Blackwood (Author), Jonathan Pezza (Editor)

Meet Dr. John Silence, a physician of extraordinary gifts who treats ailments no ordinary doctor can cure. Independently wealthy and rigorously trained in "psychical medicine," Silence investigates haunted houses, elemental forces, shapeshifting cults, and intrusions from beyond our reality.

In this landmark 1908 collection by Algernon Blackwood, the pioneering occult detective applies both scientific rigor and psychic sensitivity to six supernatural cases. From a comedy writer tormented by unseen entities to a remote village hiding ancient rituals, Silence confronts horrors that defy rational explanation, yet never loses his nerve or his compassion.

A foundational text of supernatural detective fiction that influenced generations of weird fiction writers.
