Through the seasons of life from girlhood to young adulthood to maturity and age, the author discovers truths about God that she calls her "Gems". Woven throughout are scenes of missionary life. As a "missionary kid" in Brazil, she learns early about God's protection in danger. As a young woman she finds she can trust God in perplexity and setbacks. Finally, even loss is a doorway through which she finds fulfillment in God.

Beverly Hubbard grew up in a missionary family in Brazil. She and her five siblings were educated in missionary boarding schools. After earning a teaching degree in the United States, she returned to Brazil to teach in a mission school. She and her husband served there 13 years and later taught in Christian schools in Florida. After returning to America, she published her first book, The Story of the Bible, to introduce the Bible to people who don't know much about it. Later she published a Study Guide and Study Guide Answers as teaching supplements for The Story of the Bible. She wrote Gems from My Journey partly to provide background for the writing of her first three books and partly to leave a legacy for her four children and eleven grandchildren, all of whom she loves very much.
