Zola's masterpiece of working life, Germinal (1885), exposes the inhuman conditions of miners in northern France in the 1860s. By Zola's death in 1902 it had come to symbolize the call for freedom from oppression so forcefully that the crowd which gathered at his State funeral chanted "Germinal! Germinal!"

While it is a dramatic novel of working life and everyday relationships, Germinal is also a complex novel of ideas, given fresh vigor and power in this new translation. It is also the thirteenth book in the Rougon-Macquart cycle, which celebrates its centenary in October 1993 with a new film version of Germinal starring Gerard Depardieu.

Émile Zola was born in 1840 and worked as a journalist before turning to fiction. He wrote his first major novel, Thérèse Raquin, in 1867, and the publication of L'Assommoir ten years later made him the most famous writer in France. His work has influenced authors from August Strindberg to Theodore Dreiser to Tom Wolfe. He died in 1902.
About Peter Collier
Peter Collier was the founding editor of Encounter Books. His illustrious career as a writer and editor spanned more than half a century, beginning with Ramparts magazine in the 1960s. Among his other books are Medal of Honor: Portraits of Valor Beyond the Call of Duty, now in its third edition, Political Woman: The Big Little Life of Jeane Kirkpatrick, and Things in Glocca Morra, his second novel and final book.
