Book Overview

Hospital Sketches is Louisa May Alcott's vivid Civil War account of nursing, wounded soldiers, wartime hospitals, and the emotional cost of service. Written from Alcott's own experience as a volunteer nurse, the book follows the fictionalized narrator Tribulation Periwinkle from New England to the Union hospital wards of Georgetown, where wounded men from the Battle of Fredericksburg arrive in pain, confusion, courage, and fear. With humour, candour, tenderness, and moral force, Alcott records the exhaustion, absurdity, sorrow, and human dignity of hospital life during the American Civil War.

First published in 1863, Hospital Sketches brought Alcott wide public attention before the success of Little Women. It is both literary sketch and personal witness: a compact work of Civil War nonfiction shaped by Alcott's sharp eye for character, social detail, suffering, and resilience. For readers of American literature, Civil War history, women's wartime writing, nursing history, medical history, and Louisa May Alcott's life and work, Hospital Sketches remains one of the most important firsthand literary accounts of Union hospital service.
