The last novel of the "Reconstruction Trilogy" books sees the Klans decline and followed the story of lawyer and North Carolina Grand Dragon John Graham, as he suffers a personal collapse following problems with alcohol and economic impoverishment.


He orders the disbanding of his Klan, but a group of upstarts refuse to follow his orders, and continue their activities, quickly devolving into a program of terror across the state.


When a judge is murdered by a man in Klan uniform, Graham's troubles increase as he becomes the primary suspect . . .


Meanwhile, Graham's love interest, Stella Butler, hires a northern Secret Service detective to find the real murderer, and intrigue follows intrigue until the situation is at last resolved, and the "traitor" is found out.


The book was highly successful in its day, selling in the hundreds of thousands. The other two volumes in this trilogy, "The Leopard's Spots" and "The Clansman," were equally as successful, with "The Clansman" forming the basis of the epic 1915 movie "Birth of a Nation."

Thomas Dixon, Queen Mary University of London Thomas Dixon is Professor of History and Director of the Centre for the History of the Emotions at Queen Mary University of London. His research and teaching explore the intellectual and cultural histories of passions, emotions, love, altruism, tears, and weeping, especially in Britain. His books include From Passions to Emotions: The Creation of a Secular Psychological Category (2003), The Invention of Altruism: Making Moral Meanings in Victorian Britain (2008), and Weeping Britannia: Portrait of a Nation in Tears (2015). His broadcast work has included histories of friendship and of solitude for BBC Radio 4, and an award-winning podcast series, "The Sound of Anger", made as part of a Wellcome Trust research project on emotional health.
About Williams
Saul Williams is an acclaimed poet, musician, and actor. The film Slam, which he cowrote and starred in, won the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival (1998), and the Camera d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival. He has contributed to The New York Times, voiced Jean-Michel Basquiat in Downtown 81, and cut records with Rick Rubin and Trent Reznor. He has spoken at more than 200 universities where his poetry has been added to the curriculum of dozens of creative writing programs, and has taught poetry/performance workshops around the world. He recently starred in the Broadway musical Holler If Ya Hear Me. His books include S/HE, said the shotgun to the head., and The Dead Emcee Scrolls. He lives in New York.
