Fighting throughout World War I, he recorded his experiences in several books, most famously in Storm of Steel. He served as a Marine in the Vietnam War, where he was awarded the Navy Cross, the Bronze Star, two Navy Commendation Medals for valor, two Purple Hearts, and ten air medals. He lives near Duvall, Washington.
