Jane Austen was a renowned English novelist, best known for her six major novels that critique the British landed gentry at the end of the 18th century. Born on December 16, 1775, in Steventon, Hampshire, England, Austen’s works explore themes of women’s dependency on marriage for social standing and economic security. Her most famous works include ‘Pride and Prejudice,’ ‘Sense and Sensibility,’ and ‘Emma.’
Despite the contemporary popularity of her works, Austen’s identity as an author was not widely known during her lifetime. Austen died on July 18, 1817, but her writing continues to be celebrated for its wit, social commentary, and realistic characters.
