Dear Papa: The Letters of Patrick and Ernest Hemingway

Book Overview: Dear Papa: The Letters of Patrick and Ernest Hemingway

An intimate and illuminating glimpse at Ernest Hemingway as a father, revealed through a selection of letters he and his son Patrick exchanged over the span of twenty years.

In the public imagination, Ernest Hemingway looms larger than life. But the actual person behind the legend has long remained elusive. Now, his son Patrick shares the letters they exchanged over two decades, offering a glimpse into how one of America’s most iconic writers interacted with his children. These letters reveal a father who wished for his children to share his interests–hunting, fishing, travel–and a son who was receptive to the experiences his father offered.

Edited by and including an introduction by Patrick Hemingway’s nephew Brendan Hemingway and his grandson Stephen Adams, and featuring a prologue and epilogue by Patrick reflecting on his father’s legacy, Dear Papa is a loving and collaborative family project and a nuanced, fascinating portrait of a father and son.

About the Authors

Ernest Hemingway

Ernest Hemingway

Ernest Hemingway, a stalwart of American literature, was known for his succinct and straightforward writing style that starkly contrasted with the elaborate prose favored by many of his contemporaries. Born July 21, 1899, in Oak Park, Illinois, Hemingway melded his experiences as an ambulance driver in World War I, a journalist during the Spanish Civil War, and a deep-sea fisher in Cuba and the Florida Keys, with a dramatist’s eye for narrative to produce works of enduring significance. His novels and stories—among them “The Old Man and the Sea,” “A Farewell to Arms,” and “The Sun Also Rises”—exhibit searing insights into the human condition and earned Hemingway a Nobel Prize in Literature in 1954.

Amidst his literary success, Hemingway led a lifestyle often as adventurous as those of his characters. His passion for outdoor pursuits, reflected in his love of fishing, hunting, and bullfighting, is passionately inscribed in much of his work. Later in life, Hemingway continued his adventures as a war correspondent during the Spanish Civil War and World War II, experiences that infused a dramatic sensibility and an acute awareness of mortality into his writings.

Despite battling physical decline and mental health issues towards the end of his life, Hemingway’s cultural impact as a writer remains profound. His discipline, knack for concise prose, and his ability to weave a compelling, honest tale continue to resonate with readers worldwide. Serving as an inspiration for countless authors, Ernest Hemingway, who tragically took his own life in 1961, leaves behind a literary legacy that continues to shape the landscape of American literature.

Patrick Hemingway

Patrick Hemingway, born on June 28, 1928, is an esteemed American book editor and writer, widely recognized as the second son of the legendary author, Ernest Hemingway. Following his graduation from Harvard University, Patrick embarked on a prosperous career in the publishing industry which included a tenure at Random House in New York. Born into a legacy of literary mastery, his insights and works significantly enriched the global literary sphere, uniquely guised with the prestigious perspective of his father’s life and craft.

In his professional life, Patrick is best known for his noble stewardship of Ernest Hemingway’s posthumous works. His astute editing of “A Moveable Feast” and “True at First Light” have garnered substantial acclaim, reacquainting the world with the iconic prose of his Pulitzer and Nobel Prize-winning parent. Remarkably, Patrick has also ventured out of his father’s grand shadow, authoring his evocative memoir, “The Hemingway Book Club of Kosovo,” based on his time spent in Africa, yielding another reputable imprint in the Hemingway literary lineage.

An avid adventurer, much like his father, Patrick Hemingway spent a significant part of his life amid the wilderness of East Africa, working as a professional big-game hunter and conducting wildlife conservation efforts. He has dedicated much of his life to preserving the African wilderness and its big game, which strongly reflected in his written works. Over ninety years old and still an active contributor to the literary world, Patrick continues to represent the Hemingway essence, establishing an inspiring legacy of his own.
