Book Overview: Sorcerer to the Crown

One of NPR’s 50 Favorite Sci-Fi and Fantasy Books of the Past Decade

Magic and mayhem clash with the British elite in this whimsical and sparkling debut.

The Royal Society of Unnatural Philosophers maintains the magic within His Majesty’s lands. But lately, the once proper institute has fallen into disgrace, naming an altogether unsuitable gentleman as their Sorcerer Royal and allowing England’s stores of magic to bleed dry. At least they haven’t stooped so low as to allow women to practice what is obviously a man’s profession…

At his wit’s end, Zacharias Wythe, Sorcerer Royal of the Unnatural Philosophers, ventures to the border of Fairyland to discover why England’s magical stocks are drying up, an adventure that brings him in contact with Prunella Gentlewoman, a woman with immense power and an unfathomable gift, and sets him on a path which will alter the nature of sorcery in all of Britain–and the world at large…

About the Author

Zen Cho

Zen Cho is a renowned Malaysian author of speculative fiction and fantasy. Her global reputation stems from her unique ability to intertwine elements of her southeast Asian heritage with elements of speculative fiction, offering readers a fascinating blend of cultures and themes. Born and raised in Selangor, Malaysia, she later moved to the UK, where her passion for writing blossomed. She has a Juris Doctor (JD) degree from the University of Cambridge, but her love for storytelling led her in an entirely different direction.

Ms. Cho gained international recognition and acclaim with the release of her debut novel, “Sorcerer to the Crown” – a stunning mix of Regency-era conventions and magic, lauded for its ingenuity and humor. This engaging story not only received widespread critical appreciation but also earned her the prestigious British Fantasy Award. She is also the author of the cyberpunk novella “The Order of the Pure Moon Reflected in Water” and several short story collections, including “Spirits Abroad” and “Cythonic: Malaysian Stories”.

While Zen Cho’s works are largely marked by their inventive narratives and strong female protagonists, what truly sets her apart is her adeptness at infusing her narratives with thought-provoking commentaries on race, gender, and colonialism. Indeed, through her imaginative storytelling, Zen Cho has adeptly created a niche for herself in the world of speculative fiction and continues to captivate her readers with her insightful and compelling narratives.
